Brian Ó Gáibhín - Zoom Session

13th May 2021

(Note, everyone - not just OGA members - is welcome to attend this Zoom talk).

DBOGA invites you to join our next Zoom session on The Naomh Crónán Story, which will be given by Brian Ó Gáibhín on Thursday 20th May at 20.00hrs.

In our final talk of this Zoom series Brian Ó Gáibhín tells the incredible story of the iconic East coast Galway hooker Naomh Crónán. Her story begins back in the 1960’s when a group of Irish language enthusiasts in the Dublin suburb of Clondalkin Village met to promote Irish culture and language. In 1972 the group was officially named Muintir Chrónáin - the Community of Crónán, a local historical saint. The group grew and founded six schools where the whole curriculum was taught through the Irish language. One evening in 1993 some of the lads were sitting around in the bar of Aras Chrónáin when Michael Heffernan (a hitherto undeclared fan of Galway hookers) was gazing at a wall photo of a hooker and uttered the immortal words: “We could do that! We could build one of those!” Almost to a man the others replied “An bhfuil tu as do ceann a Mhicil, arsa duine amháin - Are you off your head Mick?” Brian’s talk will explain the incredible story of what happened next.
