“MAXED OUT?” The story of the Boeing 737 Max airliner, which at the time of writing has just returned to service in the USA having been grounded world-wide for nearly two years. In late 2018, a Lion Air 737 Max crashed in Indonesia and in April 2019 an Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max crashed in Africa. This led to the grounding of the new version of world's most long lived and popular short range airliner.

A special talk by aviator and sailor John Leahy about the saga of the Boeing 737-MAX and how the world’s leading aircraft manufacturer ended up with 800 planes grounded. What led to the two planes crashing in Indonesia and Ethiopia? Was it a computer glitch that could not be overcome, as is commonly thought? Or something else? And was there a third plane involved? Will the plane ever regain the confidence of the passengers given that another Boeing 737 crashed on 9th January this year in the same region - Indonesia? John will also update us on the latest trends and enable us to answer the question “Is Flying still Safe?” It is something of interest to all, whether we fly as passengers, or are just “plane crazy.”

John Leahy, a former Chief Pilot with British Airways has 35 years of flying experience in particular with the Boeing 707, 737 (all variants) 757, 767, 747 Jumbo and for five years, the Lockheed TriStar. John tested new models of Boeing aircraft at their factory at Seattle prior to acceptance by the airline. He has been an aviation consultant since his retirement. Swapping his flying goggles for his peaked yachting cap John is also the Hon. Secretary of the Cruising Association of Ireland.
