DBOGA invites you to join our next Zoom session The Story of the Historic Manx Fishing Ketch Aigh Vie, which will be given by Paddy Murphy on Thursday 24th March at 20.00hrs.

DBOGA member Paddy Murphy will recount the fascinating story of the Aigh Vie, the iconic fishing ketch built in the Isle of Man in 1916 as an anonymous gift for William Bell, the skipper of a fishing boat, who saved many lives after the sinking of the Transatlantic liner Lusitania in May, 1915.

Paddy will explain the story behind his extensive renovation of the Aigh Vie, executed largely single handedly over a 15 year period from his Connemara home near Renvyle and aided now and again by invasions of members of the DBOGA who brought extra skills and much encouragement with them.

In the summer of 2018 Paddy, helped by his grandson Conor, sailed Aigh Vie south-about to Dublin and then across the Irish Sea to her birthplace in the Isle of Man and made the return passage “over the top,” completing a circumnavigation of Ireland.

Multi-talented owner Paddy Murphy - officially he is a blacksmith but can turn his hand to anything - is a man of very many parts and talents and is cheerfully and enthusiastically imbued in Irish music and culture befitting his Connemara domicile.
