Rik Janssen - Zoom Session
19th April 2021
(Note, everyone - not just OGA members - is welcome to attend this Zoom talk).
DBOGA invites you to join our next Zoom session on From The Netherlands to Connemara: Learning to Sail, the Galway Hooker’s Iconic Design and the Building of the Moorhen, which will be given by Rik Janssen on Thursday 29th April at 20.00hrs.
Netherlands based DBOGA member Rik Janssen, completes our trilogy of Zoom talks focusing on the iconic Galway Hooker. Dennis Aylmer chronicled his discovery and restoration of the bád mór Morning Star and Michael Brogan set out the broader context of the decline and the early revival of the Galway Hooker during the 1970’s and 1980’s. Rik will give us another chapter of the fascinating Hooker revival story, this time from the 1990’s. Rik will describe how he began sailing in the Netherlands, leading ultimately to his interest in the design of the Galway Hooker. Rik will explain how, with the help of John Healion, he built and launched the bád mór Moorhen, based on the lines of the Naomh Mairtin in the Netherlands. Rik shipped her to Ireland in 1999 and she took part in many sailing festivals on the east and west coast. Rik is also well known for building an all steel Galway Hooker and will explain this project during our Autumn series of Zoom talks.
