Simple Sailors - Richard Murphy
5rd March 2021
DBOGA member Michael Weed will be throwing off the mooring lines to embark on a short voyage through the poetry of Richard Murphy on Sunday evening, March 7th, 2021 on DBOGA’s Flotsam & Jetsam What’s App channel.
Murphy owned the Galway hooker Ave Maria and regularly sailed her from Cleggan to Inishbofin taking guests on fishing and daytrips. Cleggan was her home port where Murphy lived in a stone cottage overlooking the pier. He later owned the Truelight, another Galway hooker, which is currently being worked on by DBOGA member Donal Greene. Murphy’s first published poetry book was Sailing to an Island (1963).
Michael’s voyage through Murphy’s poetry complements Dr Mick Brogan’s DBOGA Zoom talk next Thursday, March 11th, 2021 on The Demise & Early Revival of the Galway Hooker.
