A Review of Solent Spring/Summer 2025 Events

We started the sailing season with a very informal rally at Newtown Creek in early May in absolutely glorious weather even though the temperature was a little low! Being a Bank Holiday weekend, Newtown was busy but nevertheless 5 gaffers managed to meet in the quietest part of the creek.

At the end of May we held our busiest event of the year, the annual Yarmouth Regatta. This ran from Thursday, 22 May to Monday 26th May.  There were plenty of activities to satisfy all both on and off the water including a row up the River Yar, a cruise in company to Hurst Castle, racing in brisk conditions followed by supper at the Yarmouth Sailing Club with plenty of live music. We also welcomed Mike Beckett, the OGA National President and his lovely boat ‘Bonita’  for the weekend, on passage to St Malo. For a flavour of the event, see our three reports from participating boats Creekability II, Oystercatcher and Molly of Mylor.

The Yarmouth Gaffers Regatta was be followed just two weeks later with the rally to St Malo organised by our French Gaffer friends to be held over the 6-8 June. At the time of going to press some 27 UK registered boats signed up with a few intending to head off from Yarmouth towards the Channel Islands and beyond.

July will see us at the ever-popular Folly Inn and Newport on the Medina (booking now open), upstream from Cowes. We are considering having a very casual cruise in company to Poole followed by a return to the Beaulieu River at the end of August where will combine a relaxing weekend with our Annual Race & Rally.
