As well as running the Boat Register with her husband Julian and being the Scottish Secretary, she helped organise OGA 60th events in 2023 including the Round Britain Event and the 2025 AGM in Gloucester. She takes an active role in OGA Committees, often taking on additional work.”

Citation: - This trophy is awarded for ‘the best contribution to the Gaffers Log and associated media content (e.g. blogs, website, YouTube , Facebook, Instagram or Boat Register)’. Since it was first presented in 2019 it has always been awarded to an individual. “This year we would like to propose that it is awarded to the ‘Sociable Solent Sailing’ group of Solent Gaffers for their excellent website with regular illustrated posts including notices about future events, galleries, links to Press coverage, reports and race results as well as an area promoting the Association. The site is supported with regular posts on social media including Solent Gaffers Facebook Group and Instagram. Like all other Areas, there are contributions to Gaffers Log to complement their online presence.”

Citation: - “I would like to nominate an individual whose energy and enthusiasm for the EC OGA, Gafflings, promoting youth sailing and the National OGA knows no bounds. With out this person I would certainly not have agreed to become EC President and been able to ‘sail south until the butter melts’ as EC President in absentia. Pete Elliston AKA ‘Pete The Knife’ has made a significant contribution to the EC as Area Secretary and Vice President, is a ‘Champion’ of the Gaffling and a fantastic ambassador for the OGA locally on the EC, Nationally and Internationally.”

 

The Alan Hidden Trophy – Georgina Tall

Best outstanding performance for a Younger Member of the OGA

I’m writing in with my nomination of Georgina Tall for the Alan Hidden trophy, less for specifically sailing reasons (though I’m sure she’s great at that too, we’re just on different coasts most of the time!) I would like to nominate her for the work she’s done to bring the Younger OGA group together over the course of the year, we all get on really well but I’m certain that without Georgina we wouldn’t have done half as much as we have done this year, and we wouldn’t be such a cohesive group without her efforts. She’s put in so much of her own time and attention behind the scenes, and gone out of her way to do really thoughtful things for the group which make everyone feel like they’re included and part of something bigger. She does it all quite quietly and behind the scenes, but it’s not easy to keep up with things like that on top of organising your own life, and I think it’s an effort worth recognising.

 

 

David Cade Memorial Trophy – Mike Forwood

A most outstanding contribution to the Association during the Year over and above the call of duty.

We would like to propose Mike Forwood for the ‘Jolie Brise’ Trophy – (The GMC decided that the David Cade Memorial Trophy would be more appropriate). "Captain Mike Forwood has been a Member of the OGA since 1998 (or for 26 years). Previously, a professional merchant seaman, Mike has commanded several tall ships over the years and has continued to pass on his invaluable experience and expertise to many a new, and young, gaffers (including myself), in the South West and further afield.  He has been the longest serving member of the SW Committee, organising many events, both on and off the water, both as a Member and more recently as SW Events Secretary, after a stint as SW President.  At a National level he has curated the main OGA trophies and ensured they have been available for presentation at the Annual AGM's, a not inconsiderable task, now that these events are held all around the country!  He thoroughly deserves our heartfelt thanks and is a worthy recipient of the Jolie Brise trophy for a significant contribution to Gaff Rig as well as the Association. Hopefully he won't mind being referred to as a genuine and original ‘Old Gaffer’!

 

 

ODTAA – Jeremy Lambert

A contribution to the OGA not covered by any other trophy

I would like to nominate Jeremy Lambert, the North West President for his role and enthusiasm in running events, his role in setting up the Morecambe Bay Prawner Trust to buy Spray, a prawner built in 1896 and his work on repainting Spray.

 

 

Grumpy II Cups – Martin Goodrich

An OGA skipper and young crew for an outstanding sailing achievement during the year.

Martin Goodrich & ‘Onward of Ito’ who made two voyages this summer (2024). Here’s what Martin undertook with son and grandson in 2024 on two separate voyages . . .

1. Sailed from Greenwich to the Netherlands for NL20 with his son Luke, including two quite challenging North Sea crossings as I understand.

2. Sailed ‘Onward of Ito’ from Greenwich YC to the Southwold Rally in June 2024 with his grandson, Cass who is still at school. Having experienced engine problems, they had to break the journey at Halfpenny Pier, Harwich before continuing north for the event. Cass also joined Martin during 2023 on sections of Onward's Round Britain Cruise (over the top of Scotland) when school holidays permitted.

 

 

Gaffers Tales Award – Mary Gibbs

The best contribution to the Gaffers Log

“Two years ago, the OGA marked its diamond anniversary with the OGA60 Round Britain Cruise, which attracted a gaggle of gaffers small, medium and large. The idea was to proceed clockwise via the Caledonian Canal if you were small and the Pentland Firth if you were large. The broad objective was that everyone reach the big August celebration in Ipswich. But one OGA member had a different idea. That person decided to short-circuit the round Britain marathon and use the English canal network to sail their boat from Milford Haven, up the Bristol Channel and a stretch of the Avon before motoring across southern England. That was accomplished by locking into the Kennet and Avon canal system, thence to Reading, down the Thames, kissing the sea and making Ipswich in time to join the boats that had taken the long sea road, and other boats besides and celebrate the OGA’s Diamond Jubilee.

 

So who was this intrepid voyager with a difference? It was of course Mary Gibbs with Molly Cobbler.

 

Mary, your log of that voyage made a terrific read and I for one absolutely loved it.”

 

 

Tales of Sail Award – Charles Erb

The best contribution to the Gaffers Log and complementary online content.

“The ’Tales of Sail’ trophy was first awarded in 2018. It was introduced to recognise the increase in content shared by OGA members online, not just in Gaffers Log eg blogs, websites, video & social media channels etc. This year, there is a Solent member who stands out for his lively blog, contribution to WhatsApp chats, social media posts and YouTube Channel. Content includes excellent photography, charts showing cruising routes, carefully edited videography with interesting commentary/narrative. As well as telling followers her cruising tales, ‘Meandering Molly’ shares practical advice and ideas for fellow Gaffers as well as having fun with drones and ’time-lapse' eg ‘Yacht Jenga’ (where the GoPro nearly ends up in a Dutch canal), working with spars and review of electric outboards etc.”

 

 

Janty Cup – Maddy Masters

A member under the age of 25 years for the best contribution to the Gaffers Log or to an older member writing about a youth event.

“The Janty Cup often isn’t awarded, I think it should go to Maddy Masters for her piece about Swallows & Amazons in the Summer issue of Gaffers Log: “In the words of the Gaffers Log Editor, Jay Creswell "Swallows & Amazons is the OGA’s leading open boat event for everyone. It pays homage to the author of the children’s books from which is takes it’s name, Arthur Ransom and this year’s gathering, the 25th anniversary, was clearly a great success. In writing her report, Maddy notes that the event is actually older than she is! Her lively report looks back on her memories of a ’serene little bubble’ weekend and takes the reader from her earliest memories of an exciting drive to the event, mud, creeks, fun and paper boats to this year’s event when she had the chance to race in one of the East Coast Gafflings.”

 

 

Jolie Brise Trophy – Sandy Miller

A significant contribution to Gaff Rig

“Sandy is an East Coast OGA member who may be found in his kayak, on a rib or the Committee boat at many East Coast events. The results of his endeavours ‘through the lens’ are wonderful and he’s always happy to share, posting on Facebook and Instagram soon after an event. It’s always great to have photos of your own boat, sailing well and often really close up”

The Cape Horn Trophy is the belaying pin from 'MN Bark Endeavour' which travelled around the World, and was donated to the OGA by Patrick Reid, OGA of Western Australia. The Trophy is awarded:
