Rubbing bead
The rubbing bead and inwhale forms a structural stiffener round the top edge of the hull.
To get the strength and still allow the timber to bend around the hull it is laimated as shown in the drawing.
Timber sections
A hardwood should be used for the rubbing bead. A contrasting timber can be used for the the thinner section for decorative effect.
Begin by fitting the two inwhales to the inside edge of the hull. Begin by clamping a piece of 30*25mm strip to the inside of the hull. Cut the strip accurately to but up against the transom and then work forwards clamping as you work forwards. Cut the strip to fit inside the stem but at this stage the joint does not need to be accurate as a false inner stem will be fitted later. Dry fit both sides before gluing into place so that one side of the hull is not stressed more than the other and the boat becomes twisted.
Double check the hull is not twisted by placing battens across the hull and looking to check that they are parallel.
Glueing the strips needs two people as one will need to hold the strip off the hull as the second person clamps the joint. You will need lots of clamps!
Block
Here Sapele has been used for the wider strips and an inlay strip of Sycamore for decorative effect. Radius the inboard edge 6mm and the outboard edge 9mm both top and bottom or shpae to the profile on the drawing if prefered.
