We thought the message below may be of use to other OGA members that will be travelling to France next year.  

Carriage of Auto Inflate Lifejackets. 

In 2023 on the way to Morbihan we were held at Brittany Ferries (BF) Plymouth Border Control because we admitted that we were carrying gas cylinders, namely those in our auto inflate lifejackets.  We were told that we might not be able to take them onboard the ship and had to wait for a rep from BF to check. 

We will be travelling Plymouth - Roscoff on 24 May and 2 June 2025 for the Semaine du Golfe, so checked the BF website for guidance but apart from carrying up to 47kg of LNG etc., nothing about small CO2 cylinders.  I contacted BF who said I must contact the duty operation managers in both ports of departure.  This I have done and now been told that:  

'BF will now prepare a declaration on our behalf, at check-in a green sticker will be placed on your windscreen which must remain in place until you have cleared Border Controls in Roscoff and likewise, in Plymouth on your return.' 

They went onto say: 'Thank you also for making us aware that there may be others travelling to attend the boat festival. If you do speak to anyone else who maybe attending, please advise them to contact us in advance and that the maximum life jackets that can be carried in each vehicle is six.’

BF are asking that travellers contact them well in advance of travel.

I am guessing that the carriage of gas cylinders is the same at all UK/French ports. 

While this whole authorisation process has not been arduous following my initial contact with BF, I have suggested that more clarity is required on their website.
